How to solve “Unknown Update time” error after adding a time of the last data refresh (a time stamp) to a view in a Tableau dashboard

In Tableau Desktop you can add last data refresh time / Update time (a time stamp) to the top of the view with following the below steps:

  1. Open your workbook and navigate to the sheet for which you would like to display the time of the last data refresh.
  2. Select Worksheet > Show Title.
  3. Double-click the title.
  4. In the Edit Title dialog box, select Insert > Data Update Time, and then click OK.
  5. Add any field to the filter shelf and leave all selections blank and click OK.
  6. Save the modifications.
  7. Add the sheet to your dashboard.

The sheet can be sized in the dashboard to as your desire. They also can be set up as floating objects.

Please note that the <Data Update Time> value depends on your type of connection:

  • Extract-based connections will display the last time the extract was refreshed.
  • Live file-based and live database connections will display the last time the data source was refreshed in Tableau Server.
  • When using data blending, the timestamp will display the update time of the primary data source.

Important Note: The worksheet being used to display the data refresh time will display “Unknown Update Time” unless there is at least one dimension or measure in the view.
